I have been working on ideas for my MFA thesis. The final works will combine ideas about play, games, language learning, and poetry… most likely. One of my prototypes/works in progress is a piece I showed at Bragg’s Pie Factory in downtown Phoenix. It is called How to Corral. It is a metaphorical piece about notions of wildness vs. normalcy (but mostly it is just fun and causes the participant to look deeply into the relationships of — how the words move — the physical movements the participant must engage in — and the meanings of the words — ). Link to the project page of How to Corral here.
The version I showed at Bragg’s uses a WiiMote. I developed with the WiiFlash server. It is awesome and so easy to use, I hope to use it again. You can download the WiiFlash server here. You must have bluetooth enabled on your computer or laptop to use WiiFlash.
I am still getting some quirkiness from WPFolio, however, the benefits far outweigh the weirdness. My Art Projects “category-page” seems to be too full already and is jamming posts onto another page. It also seems to put things in whatever pattern it likes. Will the thumbnails ever appear as a flamingo shape? We will just have to see.
Hooray for recent work. This semester I was able to attend the 2008 Participatory Design Conference held in Bloomington, Indiana. The call for artists required participatory art pieces and all the pieces were shown in the participART track. Although the conference was fairly small (less than 300 attendees), it was very international. I met people from all over the world, especially from Scandinavia considering they lead innovations in tech and design. My friend Becky went as well and showed her amazing Body Technology Interfaces. I showed Supacollager, which was a collaborative participatory art project I did with my friends Joseph Adams and Isaac Wallis. We all share the credit for concept. Isaac did a lot of the Python programming while Joe and I did user testing and UX design plus a little programming, as well as maintenance of the flickr group that was used for the conference. Check out my post on Supacollager HERE. Showing work at this venue was quite an experience. The final keynote speaker was Natalie Jeremijenko. Her talk was great.
I am currently in the process of updating my website. This site uses a WordPress theme called WPfolio. You can link to it here. So far it has been pretty easy to port over all my stuff, however I have run into a few unusual bugs. Occasionally the thumbnails on the pages are arranged strangely and uploads are wonky here and there. If you use WPFolio, I would love to hear from you as I only have one other friend (a very awesome one) who uses it, her name is Becky Stern, and she is super awesome and quite web famous indeed! I used to use Dreamweaver and Flash and I coded my own CSS, but I think this tool will help me actually keep my website up to date, all the time. I hope to use the blog as updates for news, works in progress, and tidbits about personal interests (games, interactive media, ed-media, movies, etc) that are inspiring for my own work. Awesome. stay tuned!
