Building Virtual Worlds is an interdisciplinary class designed by the late Randy Pausch. It is currently taught by renowned game designer Jesse Schell. It combines artists and computer programmers for the purpose of creating immersive 3D environments. My role in this class was as a 3D modeler. Worlds that demonstrate a unique ability to engage the guest in an immersive environment are then selected to be shown at the Building Virtual Worlds showcase, one of the biggest events on Carnegie Mellon’s campus! Two worlds I was a modeler for, Peter Pan and Final Question, were demonstrated at the 2001 show.
Final Question is an interactive Virtual World. Done in a film noire style, Final Question’s imagery is suggestive of 1960’s decor and furnishings. While navigating through an apartment, the guest experiences flashbacks portraying clues about a mysterious death.

The Peter Pan Virtual World was chosen as the show opener to be performed live at the 2001 Building Virtual Worlds showcase. Our performer was group member Liya Zheng who wore an original costume while experiencing an adventure as Peter Pan. When Peter discovers that Hook has kidnapped Wendy straight from her London bedroom, he must fly all the way to Neverland and battle his worst enemy in a dual. Hook finally loses his balance and falls into the jowls of the famous crocodile.
